In 2021, Colley W. Bell III took the helm as the 13th Head of School at St. Margaret's School, situated on the scenic Rappahannock River. He enriches the institution with his extensive three-decade background in independent education. A lifelong learner and educator at heart, Mr. Bell actively engages with students by teaching 8th-grade history and U.S. history (AP).
His upbringing deeply influenced his educational journey in a girl's Episcopal boarding school environment, where his father served as headmaster, Rector, and religion instructor and his mother as the provost, dean of students, and history teacher. A product of Episcopal boarding education himself, Mr. Bell deeply values the spiritual connection and structure it provides. His bond with St. Margaret's dates back years, often recalling his parents' affectionate references to the prestigious "grand-girl's school on the river."
Mr. Bell, a Columbia University master's graduate, is keenly interested in American, Russian, and English history and the history of the Anglican Church, which he studied at Keble College, Oxford. His conversations frequently delve into historical narratives, whether about his residence in the McCall-Brockenborough House or his family's intriguing history behind the lens of the historic photographer C.M. Bell.
Together with his wife, Edwina, the Director of Advancement, they are a constant presence on campus, contributing to various initiatives in a manner reminiscent of his parents. The Bells embody a modern-day example of a husband-and-wife team dedicating their lives to the education and well-being of St. Margaret's students. Their office is also home to their Golden Retriever, Barrymore, adding a warm, welcoming touch.
Mr. Bell envisions for St. Margaret's students an education reminiscent of bygone eras, untainted by the contemporary political turmoil affecting many of America's educational institutions. He emphasizes the school's mission to provide a faith-centered, comprehensive educational experience in a close-knit setting where grace and humility are paramount. Echoing the school's ethos, Mr. Bell aspires every St. Margaret's community member to embody the motto: "As we grow in age, may we grow in grace."
