Student Life at St. Margaret’s
St. Margaret's defies many stereotypes associated with girls' boarding schools. Its ethos is rooted in humility, steering clear of arrogance or self-absorption. Our elitism is in our grace, and how we treat one another with dignity and integrity. Here, every girl is encouraged to embrace her individuality on the path to personal growth. Because of our small size, the school doesn't foster cliques or exclusive affinity groups. Instead, it cultivates a sisterhood among its students, who share their journeys—the highs and lows, victories and setbacks, fears and triumphs. We often praise the sisterhood as a bastion of social development, where the community is devoid of the negative influences that plague much of the contemporary world. At St. Margaret's, our society is one of positivity and hope, free from the divisive dynamics that too often overshadow our collective progress.
Small Town Conveniences
This creates a small-town atmosphere at St. Margaret's. Students have the freedom to stroll to nearby coffee shops and an ice cream parlor. On Friday nights, we offer "Happy Tappy Tours" shuttles, enabling students to conveniently shop at places like Food Lion, Walmart, Dollar Tree, and more—all within a 5-minute drive from the central campus or a 20-minute walk. Unlike many boarding schools situated in remote rural areas, St. Margaret's location in Tappahannock, VA allows students to explore and move around the town without being confined to campus, waiting for the weekly 20-minute trip.
A campus with plenty to do!
What activities are available on campus? Well, you and your friends have plenty of options. You can relax on the beach, go sailing or kayaking and explore Hoskins Creek, or even learn how to drive a motorboat or jet ski. If you're hungry, you can stroll within our campus bounds to Java Jacks for coffee or a sandwich, enjoy pizza at Restaurant 528, savor a burger at N&N Burger, or treat yourself to some ice cream at Acme. Additionally, you can take a dip in the pool or the river or simply unwind by the fire pit on the Latane patio while enjoying the view of the river.
Head Prefect Kendall Q. '24 came up with launching a "Scottie Bowl" to honor the Super Bowl tradition. Additionally, she suggested incorporating it into a Blue Grey Day celebration and competition. The Grey team emerged victorious in the inaugural match with a commanding 5-1 score.
