Summer Camp

Meet our Director

Leading our 2024 Summer Camp is St. Margaret's S.T.R.E.A.M. Director and Rappahannock River steward Richard Moncure. A native of our region, he is well known for his hands-on and innovative teaching practices. His former 8th-grade students at ACDS built a boat, kayaked our local tributaries, and helped restore oyster beds. Richard was named 2022-23 Innovative Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, reflecting the respect of his independent school colleagues across the Commonwealth.

The camp's mission expresses Richards's enthusiasm for our noble Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake watershed. The camp's unique setting on St. Margaret's riverfront campus includes over 1000 feet of the river bank, a beach, two docks, and a river laboratory. As much as students will enjoy various river activities, they also learn about the river and how to restore and protect it.

Campers will learn team building and achieve collective goals in the stewardship of the river. The camp is a learning environment and will spark each camper's imagination with the science and poetry of the river.

Rowing & Sculling Camp

At St. Margaret’s Rowing and Sculling Camp, we believe that the best rowers begin as scullers. Our philosophy—rooted in the principles set forth by Coach Howell—prioritizes sculling competency as the foundation for developing superior rowing technique, boat feel, and overall watermanship. This approach gives our athletes an edge, whether they ultimately compete in sculling or sweep rowing.

Sculling demands balance, symmetry, and precise blade control, all of which refine an athlete’s technical proficiency before transitioning to the rigors of sweep rowing. Our camp immerses athletes in this discipline, ensuring they gain the coordination and boat handling skills necessary to become adaptable and efficient rowers. By mastering sculling first, our athletes develop a heightened awareness of stroke mechanics, an independent sense of rhythm, and a deeper connection to the water—qualities that translate seamlessly into sweep rowing and elevate their performance in any boat class.

Coach Howell’s philosophy has long demonstrated that scullers make superior rowers. His method instills self-sufficiency, greater dexterity, and a refined technical approach, all of which provide lasting advantages on the water. Athletes at St. Margaret’s benefit from this time-honored philosophy, strengthening their rowing IQ and versatility while laying the groundwork for competitive success.

Set on the scenic Rappahannock River, our camp offers an immersive experience in both single and team boat training. With access to top-tier coaching, individualized instruction, and a progressive curriculum, athletes leave with improved confidence, stronger technique, and a deeper appreciation for the sport. Whether a beginner learning to move a single scull with precision or a seasoned rower refining their racing strategy, each participant emerges from St. Margaret’s Rowing and Sculling Camp prepared to excel on the water.
