Mollie Buxton McGirt
Mollie Buxton McGirt (83) previously of Asheville, NC passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, February 24, 2024. She had a long and fulfilled life as a beloved wife, devoted mother, and best friend to all who knew her. She was deeply proud of her children, Taylor, John, and Meghan, and even prouder of her grandchildren, Owen, Mollie, and Lily.
Mollie grew up in Newport News, VA, and studied at Mary Washington College. She met and married Robert K. McGirt and was a partner in his ministry at both First Presbyterian Church in Asheville and Countryside Presbyterian Church in Ocala, FL. Bob relied on her in many ways during his tenured career as a minister in the church. They were married for 36 years before he passed away in June of 2000. Mollie had a career as a cytologist in Asheville and Ocala.
She loved to travel and had many adventures that included several European river tours, a house exchange in Scotland, and a month in Malta with dear friends. One of her favorite places was the beach and spending time with family and friends on the NC coast. She read all manner of books and always had a book in her hand, by the sofa, or near the bed. She read the paper front to back daily and challenged herself with the daily crossword puzzle. One of her dearest activities was volunteering with Hospice of Asheville, caring for people making the transition to the next life.
Mollie was so well-loved and would tell a dear friend to stop by for a glass of wine and a peanut. She was able to get most of her lovely ladies to thrift with her and she could take a few pieces from Goodwill and look like she walked right out of Vogue. Mollie loved a good bargain and could usually be found picking through stuff at Goodwill searching for hidden treasures. And, boy, did she have an amazing eye for treasures. Mollie could spot a yard sale a mile away and knew every flea market, consignment shop, and thrift store in any town she visited. She always knew the answer to any question about entertaining, what to wear, the best recipe, the cutest hostess gift, how to write a thank you note, getting a stain out, and many other subjects.
