SMS Crew, Lacrosse, and Softball Teams Post Wins

Tappahannock, VA (April 25, 2001) - Lacrosse: St. Margaret's lacrosse team posted 14 points in two recent games to attain a 2-1 record in only its third season of competition. Senior co-captains Nikki Zuralow and Carol Combs exploded offensively, scoring a combined 17 goals in the two games.

SMS Lacrosse Captains The captains and coaches of this year's lacrosse team at St. Margaret's School are Upper Essex resident and Head Coach Cupper Dickinson, co-captains Nikki Zuralow and Carol Combs, and Assistant Coach Cathy Warren.

"We're making great strides and beginning to find our chemistry," said Head Coach Cupper Dickinson.

"Although we're young, we play with a lot of enthusiasm and have veteran leadership in our two captains," added Assistant Coach Cathy Warren. "None of these girls are about to concede anything to anyone."

On Thursday, April 4, the Scotties beat the Chesterfield Lacrosse Club by a 14-7 margin. Combs helped SMS early against Chesterfield, scoring at 0:30 seconds into the game. Katie Herrick led all scorers with four goals; Zuralow was second with three goals, while Combs added two.

The next day, playing against Steward in Richmond, Zuralow and Combs each scored six times, with Zuralow tapping in a final goal with 0.08 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.

Softball: St. Margaret's varsity softball team defeated St. Vincent de Paul School of Petersburg 12-2 in the teams' head-to-head meeting Tuesday, April 10, in Tappahannock. The victory evened St. Margaret's overall (2-2) and LIS conference (1-1) records. Because SMS led by 10 runs, the game was called after six innings of play.

Starter Shannon Davis of Tappahannock pitched a complete game, striking out 10 batters while allowing only four hits and four walks. Additionally, the Scotties committed no errors in the field. Second baseman Nikki Clark of Lively and shortstop Olivia Longest of Tappahannock led the team offensively with two hits each. Center fielder Page Winebrenner of Tappahannock contributed a triple and left fielder Mary Burke Parker of Tappahannock hit a double to reinforce the winning effort.

The Scotties faced stiffer competition on Thursday, April 5, when they played The Collegiate School in Richmond. Pitcher Davis gave up two hits and two walks while striking out three. Defensively, Davis had four unassisted putouts in the field and kept the opposing batters off balance with her fast, underhanded delivery. Second baseman Clark played flawless defense and sophomore right fielder Claire Hopkins of Oak Grove threw out an opposing runner at first base. First baseman Tess Duncan, the lone senior on this year's team, made two hits. Two errors and two passed balls, however, led to two of Collegiate's three runs and spelled defeat for St. Margaret's. Despite the final score of 2-3, Coach Saunders was upbeat and looking forward to the rematch between the teams on Friday, April 20 in Tappahannock.

Crew: The St. Margaret's School crew team turned in another solid performance at the Tidewater Crew Regatta on Saturday, April 7 at Williams Wharf Landing in Mathews County. Coaches Kary Fronk and Andrea Robinson were satisfied with the team's performance in just its second competitive meet.

"This group has tremendous talent and potential," said Coach Robinson. "Once they reach peak condition…watch out!"

St. Margaret's first team varsity four captured third place in a tightly contested sprint at the finish of the 1,500-meter race. Co-captains Claire Stephenson of Tappahannock and Britton Faulkner of White Stone, along with Kelly Proctor of Urbanna and Sarah Taliaferro of Center Cross, joined coxswain Katie Beal to form the team.

SMS's second team varsity four, comprising coxswain, Anne Czechanski, stroke Ruth Redfearn of Kinsale, and rowers Tess Cooney, Faulkner, and Lea DeBauche of Kilmarnock, finished fourth.

The Scotties' first team in the novice four class, consisting of coxswain Lulu Fiscella and rowers Virginia King, Phoebe Gilbert, Beth Brinkley and Cariad Shepherd, also placed fourth. The Scotties second team Novice four, composed of coxswain Rosalyn Morrison, stroke Laura Caton, and rowers Jessica White of Warsaw, Alston Moore, and Patricia Van Pelt, finished in fifth place in its heat.
