Ground Broken for New Dorm

Fall Family Weekend began on an historic note, as St. Margaret’s leaders broke ground for McCuan House, the school’s first new student residence in nearly 50 years.

“This is a great day for St. Margaret’s,” said Head of School Margaret Broad. “It’s only fitting that we are sharing it with parents, who have been so involved in making our dreams reality, and with students, who will benefit from this transformation in residential life.”

Joining Mrs. Broad to lift a beribboned shovel were Board of Governors Chair Sarah Belle Eason Parrott ’68, Lead Donors Patrick and Jill McCuan (Megan ’04), General Contractor Ken Miller (Taylor ’07), School President Annie Arnest ’05 and Chief Financial Officer Nancy Smith, who will manage the construction project.

Students and faculty stood along the structure’s perimeter during the ceremony to symbolize the building’s walls. Once the brief program ended, the “walls” parted for parents to enter and meet members of the Board of Governors.

Construction will begin immediately so McCuan House can open for the 2005-2006 year.

While the groundbreaking marks an important milestone, the school is still steadfastly raising money to match the McCuan’s generous gift and build a maintenance endowment. Contact contact Margaret Broad at (804) 443-3357 mbroad@sms.org to learn how you can support this exciting initiative.
