The Scotties moved up a notch in the LIS championships, finishing fifth behind a strong 25:12 performance by Kelly Proctor '02 of Urbanna. They closed the season with a record of 5-4. The young team boasts a number of rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who should put SMS in conention once again next year.

Head Coach David Cook sums up the season, his first and the Scotties' second, thusly: "The girls were, in some way, transformed by running cross-country this fall. Each one can say that she grew in knowledge of herself, of life, and of running - and that's the greatest goal a coach can hope to achieve."

Field Hockey

Britt Faulkner and Carol Combs Britton Faulkner (left) of Irvington and Carol Combs (right) of Statesboro, GA led the Scotties in assists and scoring, respectively. The duo combined for 16 goals, 14 assists this fall.

After graduating seven seniors from the league-champion 1999 squad, the Scotties finished this season 2-5 in the LIS, 5-7-3 overall. The varsity field hockey team's five wins, however, speak volumes about its talent. When the Scotties were on, the were unstoppable.

SMS proved its prowess to league and non-league opponents alike, posting lopsided wins like 7-0 against Christchurch, 6-0 and 5-0 against Northumberland, and 5-1 against Virginia Episcopal. With three ties and a trio of one-point losses, including a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Covenant in the LIS tournament, no school can claim to have dominated St. Margaret's at any point this fall.

"The whole team, every individual player - especially the seniors - should be proud of our season," said Head Coach Kate Coghlan.

Third-ranked St. Margaret's closed out its 2000 varsity volleyball season with a never-give-up attitude and cohesive play against an underrated Covenant School squad in the first round of the LIS tournament. Like field hockey, volleyball faced the challenge of replacing a large number of outstanding seniors.

The Scotties finished the season 4-3 in the LIS and 6-9 overall, posting wins against Trinity, St. Anne's-Belfield, Huguenot-Blessed Sacrament, and St. Vincent's before several key players were sidelined by injuries. First-year Head Coach Natalie LaPrade is looking forward to next season, when the Scotties will return with a full and talented roster of players that includes six rising seniors.
